VPS vs dedicated - what's actually the trigger for you to upgrade?

Everyone says "upgrade to dedicated once you outgrow a VPS" but that's pretty vague in practice. I'm trying to figure out what the real, concrete signal was for people here.
Was it hitting a hard RAM/CPU ceiling, noisy neighbors tanking your performance on shared infrastructure, needing full control over the kernel/network stack, or just a cost crossover point where dedicated became cheaper than stacking VPS resources?
If you've made that jump, what was the specific moment you knew it was time, and did the migration itself cause any headaches worth warning people about?
